"From looking at the recent pictures, I can not believe how great the cemetery is starting to look. I visited Bachelors Grove many years ago and was sad to see how decrepit it was. It makes me happy to see that its being restored and its history will be preserved."
May 2nd, 2009 – Clean-Up
A clean-up has been scheduled for May 2nd 2009 from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The clean-up will consist of removing the trash that has been left behind by visitors to the cemetery. The main areas of attention will be the cemetery itself, the general area outside of the fence and the main path leading to the cemetery. Cleaning up the pond has not been added to the schedule. It is being reserved for a future date where all efforts can be focused on just the pond itself.
The only items you should bring are a pair of gloves, a few garbage bags and possibly a pick-up stick if you have one. This part of the season gives us the opportunity to remove a lot of trash before all of the bushes and weeds set in making it difficult to reach areas that don’t get trimmed.
Further details about the May 2nd clean-up will be announced as the date approaches. If you haven’t signed up to be a volunteer you may miss out on some of those details. If you wish to become a volunteer simply visit the section on becoming one.
Yes, we are still alive.
Hello everyone! Yes, we are still alive here. The lack of activity does appear to be having some negative impact on those who are interested in helping out but we have not lost direction. Luckily the cemetery has been receiving a lot less vandalism than has been seen in recent years. There is still a lot of progress to be made as it appears that some visitors are still depositing their garbage on the ground. We are thankful to those being witnessed cleaning up the area during a casual visit. Keep up the good work!
An update as to what is happening with the fallen trees and destroyed fencing is that the GRP has been told “not” to attempt to remove them. There are legal reasons for this and hopefully this issue can be resolved at some point. It certainly has become a serious issue due to the barbed wire from the fencing now at ground level and it sure is looking horrible to say the least.
For those of you that have signed up recently to become a volunteer you should expect a response soon. There have been other matters preventing a timely response but rest assured that you will be notified of any future clean-ups. Speaking of volunteering, we are looking forward to more frequent clean-ups. Most of the time we prefer to secure a permit from county officials and only announce those particular clean-ups. There is going to be a change in direction and also announce when there will be clean-ups that do not involve using tools when removing weeds and other such material. Clean-ups that are announced which do not involve the use of tools will consist of cleaning up the cemetery of bottles, aluminum cans, etc,. We will also utilize those times to focus on the general area outside of the cemetery near the fence. This lack of attention to trimming weeds should help make some progress in the general appearance of the area. The pond itself could sure use it! The poor wildlife swimming, eating and drinking in it should not have to endure such a mess!
Until next time everyone, keep up the good work picking up some of the garbage when making a casual visit!
